washington. about 2,000 people are here to listen to her speak. just an example of what a big political prize is going to be in 2012 and northern virginia is the key which is why we have michelle obama here in fredericksburg here today. this presidential campaign has been focused on the economic challenges took a turn to the foreign policy and the turmoil in the middle east. this is what michelle obama had to say. >> i want to say how truly heart-broken barack and i are about the horrific tragedy that occurred earlier this week in libya. i'm not sure if everyone is aware. but our hearts and prayers are with the families of those who gave their lives serving our country. >> reporter: now, mitt romney had his rally in the heart of fairfax today. his comments about the unrest in et middle east yesterday caused some controversy. so today he tried to turn the focus back to the economy.
5:01 pm
>> mitt romney! >> reporter: a crowd of more than 2,000 cheered mitt romney's arrival in fairfax and he began by acknowledging the attack on the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. >> we're thinking about their families and those that they left behind. what a tragedy to lose such a wonderful -- >> reporter: governor's plan for a moment of silence was cut short by a heckler, for his criticism of the obama administration reaction to the unrest. high-level republicans accused romney of speaking too quickly before all the facts were known. >> i don't really have a problem with what he said. i think what he said initially was correct. >> maybe he's the statesman we haven't had since reagan. you can have the politicians. >> reporter: romney focused more broadly on american leadership, charging that the administration's proposed military cuts would weaken it. >> as we watch the world today,
5:02 pm
sometimes it seems we're at the mercy of events instead of shaping events. and a strong america is essential to shape events. and a strong america depends on a strong military. we have to have a military. >> reporter: but northern virginia democrats say romney's reaction to events in egypt and libya this week show he's not ready to lead. >> in his statement, i thought it was very dangerous. when we're as a nation are still trying to garner facts and he's more interested in scoring political points. >> reporter: back live now at the university of mary washington where the first lady wraps up her comments. both she and mitt romney went out of their way to tell voters how important northern virginia is in this election. mitt romney said northern virginia could well determine who the next president of the united states is. julie carey, back to you. now to the latest on the attacks on our u.s. embassies abroad. protesters stormed the embassy compound in yemen today, burning several cars. did not get inside any of the buildings. they were turned back by
5:03 pm
gunfire. for a second day in a row, violent protest outside the u.s. embassy in cairo. sufficient officials are saying little about the investigation into that attack that killed the u.s. ambassador in libya on tuesday. secretary of state hillary rodham clinton condemned that violence as well as the anti-islamist video that sparked it. >> the video is disgusting, and reprensible. it appears to have a deeply cynical purpose to denigrate a great religion, and to provoke rage. but there should be no debate about the simple proposition that violence in response to speech is not acceptable. >> what's happening in the middle east is also a reminder of the risks that come with diplomatic service. derrick ward spent the day with workers and students here in washington. >> reporter: good evening. you know, there are still lots of questions being asked about
5:04 pm
the attacks on the american diplomat facilities in the middle east. but what's not being questioned is the will of those men and women who see foreign service as a calling. in fact, for some this week's incidents only strengthen their resolve. at the state department, flags are at half staff, and from across the globe the pictures are disturbing. it's brought new attention to the dangers of diplomatic service in certain parts of the world. nothing new to those who have served. they know it firsthand. >> i was the subject of two assassination attempts while i was ambassador. all of our diplomats are constantly under danger. >> reporter: students at georgetown university school of foreign service are mindful of that, too. >> certainly something to think about as i consider a possible career in the foreign service. i think you need to go in knowing that there are risks involved. >> reporter: while there's talk of the challenges, there's not a lot of discouragement, even among those looking at a middle east posting. >> i've heard in the last couple days a great desire to talk about, what is the defamation of religion, what's the proper role
5:05 pm
for the united states. you know, can we actually identify who we think are moderate muslims. >> reporter: just like the u.s. military saw increase in enlistment after the september 11th attacks, the field of foreign service saw a spike of interest. it wasn't about the projection of the american might, but the mind-set. >> i would like to think this is what i would be pursuing even if that weren't true. >> there's a lot of misperception out there in the world, and that they have a duty to serve their country and to try to dispel a lot of the myths out there. >> reporter: but for some in foreign hot spots, there may not always be much of a disstipulation between a soldier and a statesman. >> these are dedicated americans trying to do the best they can, and they are unarmed. >> let's hope that the defenses don't get larger, and security forces don't become so much thicker that it becomes harder to do modern diplomacy, which is communicating. >> reporter: so, many people who choose foreign service see it as
5:06 pm
a duty, not unlike military service, and that includes now some of the dangers. back to you. >> derrick ward. closer to home, a developing story in northeast d.c., where a man was shot inside his home earlier this afternoon. in the queen chapel neighborhood. police say the victim was shot in the head. they're not yet revealing the name and in is no word on any suspects. there's going to be a vigil tonight for the teenager shot to death on tuesday on his way to school. 18-year-old marckel ross was shot. no motive released. also, tonight police will go back to school night at central high to address parents and students. tonight's vigil begins at 7:00 at the scene of the shooting in the 6100 block of central avenue in capitol heights. national harbor has a new tenant tonight. mgm resorts international, today they opened an information office to show the job opportunities should maryland

5:08 pm
entertainment, retail. this is a chance to get to know our company better and a little more about our company's culture. >> we've really built a mini city here, hotels, restaurants, condos, convention centers. it's a mini city. to add another anchor in the quality of mgm, that's the big key element that we're so looking forward to. >> reporter: just a few miles away, rosecroft raceway opened its fall season of live racing this saturday night. rosecroft is owned by penn national, which also operates hollywood casinos in charlestown, west virginia, and perryville, maryland. penn national opposes question 7, because as worded, the casino would be awarded to national harbor. penn national wants expanded casino gambling here to increase attendance. so do players who bet on simulcast racing. >> i think it would be great for the community. this track's been here, it really has gone downhill over the last couple of years and i think it needs to be revived.
5:09 pm
it's great place to be. >> reporter: maryland live in rundel mills expanded yesterday, making it the third largest commercial casino in the country. maryland live is opposed to any new casino in prince george's county saying it made a huge investment here, relying on maryland lawmakers that it would be the closest casino to the washington suburbs, and it doesn't want its customer base cannibalized by a sixth casino in maryland. the strongest opposition to casino gambling in maryland comes from the clergy. it's expected this fall preachers will take to the pulpit delivering sermons against the sins of gambling. that's the latest live in prince george's county, christ gordon, news4. there's a silver lining if you get a speed or red light ticket in montgomery county. now you don't have to worry about late fees. a judge ordered the county to stop charging the fees because it may violate state law. the county had been charging a

i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. mitt romney's position on women's health...it's dangerous. vo:mitt romney and paul ryan would get rid of planned parenthood funding. and allow employers to deny coverage for cancer screenings and birth control. we can't afford to let him take away our choices... to take away basic health care. vo: both backed proposals to outlaw abortions...even in cases of rape and incest. i don't think that women's health issues have faced a crisis like this in decades.
